POLICOROThe city of Policoro, built and colonized around 680 BC by the Colophons, was destroyed by an Achaean coalition in the early sixth century. B.C. In the fifth century BC after a period of decline the colonies Taranto and Thuri rebuilt it on the ancient ruins of Siris giving it the name of Heraclea. It was near the city of Policoro that the first battle between the Romans and Pyrrhus took place in 280 BC. Interesting to visit is the Archaeological Park, located behind the National Museum of Siris, with the ruins of the ancient city of Heraclea-Siris. Very close to the Museum are located the Sanctuary of Demeter and the archaic temple dedicated to Dionysus dating from the seventh century B.C. Nearby lies the Policoro wood called Pantano, in which the temperate-humid climate unusual comparing to the hot and humid climate of the Ionian coast allows typical species to grow. The city of Policoro, important seaside resort in the region, offers tourists holidays facilities all year round.
